Chapter 6: A Role I Cannot Understand
Several dozen minutes later.
After that, the party came to an end without any further incidents.
However, since Walter had said he would send someone for me later, there was no way I could simply say my goodbyes and leave.
“Right this way.”
Guided by an elderly man in a butler’s uniform, I was led to a room.
There, a maid who had already been waiting took my measurements and had me change clothes, which took another several dozen minutes.
“…Sigh.”
Exhausted from it all, I let out a deep sigh in the corner of the room without even trying to hide my fatigue.
“…Well, it’s a lot better than being made to wear a maid uniform, though.”
I knew that kind of outfit didn’t suit me at all.
That was why, taking advantage of the fact that no one was listening, I muttered my true thoughts while looking at the clothes placed beside me.
“So, since I’m not a maid but an attendant… this is… right? No, but this…”
I frowned and groaned as I examined the outfit.
It closely resembled the female knight uniform I had worn in my previous life.
I had assumed that being an attendant meant I would be taking care of someone’s daily needs.
But when it came down to it, I was being dressed in something like a knight’s uniform.
Honestly, I had no idea what was going on anymore.
More importantly, why had he asked me to become his attendant in the first place?
And what was the point of asking whether I could wield a sword?
If that was the case, then why not make me a knight instead of an attendant?
The more I thought about it, the deeper I sank into confusion.
“Yeah… I have absolutely no idea.”
And so, I stopped thinking altogether.
If only there had been some simple answer—
Like my current family, the Count Waybeia household, having done something wrong, and I had been chosen as a hostage.
If such an easy explanation existed, how convenient that would have been.
But my current father was the type of man who would immediately agree if someone of higher rank, like the king or a duke, took an interest in me.
There was no way he had done anything that would warrant defying the royal family or require a hostage.
At the end of the party—
“…What on earth did you do?”
Feel had accused me like that, completely unfairly.
But I had done nothing.
If anything, that was my line.
What exactly had I done?
If possible, I wanted to ask myself that question.
As I sank into such resignation-filled thoughts—
“We have prepared a room for you as you will be serving as an attendant. I apologize for troubling you while you are tired, but may I escort you there?”
The elderly man who had been waiting outside during my measurements peeked his head through the door and spoke with a gentle smile the moment he realized we were finished.
His name, apparently, was Roberts.
He had introduced himself when guiding me to this room earlier.
“Um…”
Instead of answering his question, I spoke something entirely different.
“Mr. Roberts, why did His Majesty ask me to become his attendant?”
Seventeen years ago.
When I had served as a knight in the royal palace, I had memorized the faces and names of those who worked there at the time.
But the man named Roberts did not exist in those memories.
He must have started working at the palace after I died.
That was why I thought he might know something I didn’t.
Hence, my question.
“Why, you ask?”
He tilted his head in puzzlement.
Well, of course he would.
Serving as an attendant to the king was nothing short of a promotion.
And yet, instead of accepting it, I was questioning why it had happened at all.
On top of that, I had come to the palace in hopes of forming a connection with Duke Michel.
I should have been someone who rejoiced wholeheartedly at this turn of events.
And yet, I wasn’t—
In fact, I was reacting in the exact opposite way.
It was only natural that he would find it strange.
