Chapter 4: The Fallen Genius
Some days later.
After losing the supply source of extraordinary items, Miffiore’s downfall was swift.
He could no longer fulfill the advanced requests from the kingdom, and the only things he produced were foul-smelling, muddy failures.
Repeated mistakes forced him to pay enormous penalty fees, and the wealth of the prestigious Fart family was quickly drained.
Having lost his position and honor as a court alchemist, and even his fortune, he was coldly abandoned by the calculating heroine.
“I’m sooo sorry.”
“I have no use for a useless and poor man.”
She sneered and left him behind without a second thought.
When Miffiore heard about Lieselotte’s success in Madeucas, he appeared before her in tears.
“Lieselotte!”
“I was wrong!”
“After all, I need you!”
Wearing tattered clothes and giving off a powerful stench strong enough to make someone’s nose bend, Miffiore stumbled into the atelier filled with refreshing herbal fragrance.
There was no trace left of the arrogance he once carried.
He collapsed onto the floor, clinging to it as his knees gave way, sobbing pitifully.
“I’m sorry for all the horrible things I said to you!”
“I was an idiot!”
“I’m sorry!”
“Um…”
“Who might you be?”
“I-it’s me!”
“Your husband, Miffiore!”
“Ah…”
“I’m terribly sorry, but I’m currently working on a new magical tool, so I can’t spare the time.”
Lieselotte puffed out her cheeks slightly and waved her hand dismissively.
“If you’re here for business, please leave.”
“T-that can’t be!”
“Please help me, Lieselotte!”
“Since you left, my reputation has completely collapsed!”
“At this rate, I won’t be able to continue as an alchemist!”
“Please come back!”
“Then perhaps you should pursue a path other than alchemy.”
“I-I can’t do that!”
“My family has been alchemists for generations…”
“Then you should relearn alchemy yourself and train harder.”
“Instead of relying on me.”
“B-but…”
“Besides, there are other alchemists, aren’t there?”
“You could ask them.”
“I-I can’t do that either…”
“I paid all the penalty fees.”
“I have no money left…”
“Then please give up.”
Faced with a cold gaze that looked at him as if he were nothing more than a stone by the roadside, Miffiore recoiled and cried out in despair.
While listening to his anguished cries fading behind her, Lieselotte’s eyes sparkled brightly, as if a tail were happily wagging behind her.
“Now then.”
“What kind of magical tool should I make next?”
The exhilarating and free second life of the genius alchemist who had abandoned love was beginning right here and now.
