Chapter 4: An Unexpected Appointment
“Now thenâ”
As if completely unconcerned with my wide-eyed confusion, Walter continued speaking without pause.
“âCan you wield a sword?”
“A swordâŚ?”
Why is he talking to me?
My mind was filled with that question, but I couldnât exactly ignore a question from His Majesty the King.
All around me, countless suspicious gazes were directed my way, as if to say, why you of all people?
Even Feel looked shocked, staring at me like she was asking what kind of trick I had pulled.
âŚIf thereâs an answer, Iâd like to hear it myself.
“âŚâŚâŚâŚ”
I closed my mouth and thought carefully.
What would be the correct answer here?
Can I wield one, or canât I?
As a noble lady, the proper response would undoubtedly be to say that I cannot.
Howeverâ
Even if I could wield a sword, would such an ability be expected of a noble lady?
âŚNo, it wouldnât.
Which meant this was a test.
To determine whether I was a barbaric noblewoman or not.
Besides, there was no way Walter could have realized who I truly was.
I had been reincarnated.
No matter how perceptive he was, there was no way he could have figured it out.
There was still the question of why he had singled me out specifically, but it must have been a coincidence.
âŚOtherwise, there would be no explanation, given that Flora Waybeia had never once met Walter before.
Thereforeâ
The choice for someone like me, who had no intention of getting involved with Walter, was obvious.
“I can manage it to a modest extent.”
Saying that, I glanced at my handsâhands that had developed calluses from swinging a sword whenever I had the chance, a remnant of my previous life as a knightâand answered modestly.
Perfect.
A flawless answer without a single opening.
âŚOr at least, it should have been.
“I see. Then youâstarting today, you will serve as one of my attendants.”
For some reason, the response I received was completely opposite to what I had expected.
It wasnât my fault that my face twitched slightly.
“An⌠attendantâŚ?”
Surely, I must have misheard.
Clinging to that faint hope, I asked againâonly to receive an immediate reply.
“Thatâs right.”
“Iâve been told repeatedly to appoint at least one or two attendants. Itâs become quite the nuisance, so I was just looking for someone suitable⌔
âAnd here you are.
Walter grinned.
And I suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to shout, why me of all people?!
“What is your name?”
“âŚFlora Waybeia, Your Majesty.”
I couldnât exactly commit the disrespect of refusing to answer, so I reluctantly gave my name.
Walter seemed pleased.
“I see. Then I shall inform Lord Waybeia myself.”
I wanted to tell him to stop.
My father had already sent me here to form ties with the duke.
If he heard that I had been appointed as one of His Majestyâs attendants, he would undoubtedly accept without hesitation.
Damn it.
With my name now known, and the decision seemingly made that I would become Walterâs attendant starting todayâ
Just as it seemed everything had been decided without regard for anyone else presentâ
“âŚYour Majesty.”
A voice called out to Walter, laced with unmistakable suspicion.
It belonged to the star of this partyâDuke Michel.
