Chapter 2: Meeting Uncle Nagayoshi’s Parents!

After that, “utter chaos” was probably the best way to describe it.

People kept coming and going in a frantic rush, and before I knew it, the entire day had passed.

That said, I was trying to sleep on what was practically a wooden floor rather than a tatami mat.

A thin cloth they called nightwear had been draped over me.

It seemed they had made it somewhat thicker than usual because I was a child, but even so, my body ached too much to sleep.

So I decided to organize my thoughts until I got sleepy.

Apparently, I had become linked to—or reincarnated into—the third life of Miyoshi Nagayoshi.

No, actually, it seemed there had already been some sort of contact during his first life.

However, Nagayoshi had completely ignored it and lived his life according to recorded history.

He supposedly died deeply regretting that decision in his later years.

Then, when he opened his eyes, he found himself unexpectedly starting life over again.

A classic time leap.

At that point, there had apparently been no contact with me.

He had tried various things to overcome the failures of his first life, but nothing worked.

Though some details differed, the final result ended up much the same.

Then he awoke in despair.

It was his third life.

While wondering what to do next, an incident occurred that had never happened in either of his previous two lives.

Despite being on his third run through life, he decided to climb a tree.

He was only three years old by traditional counting—essentially a toddler—yet he attempted something reckless.

As expected, he lost his balance and fell.

Just as he was thinking, ‘So this is the end, even after being given another chance,’ he saw an elderly woman sleeping before him.

At that moment, he remembered the contents of the “Butterfly Dream” he had been shown during his first life.

And so, he woke me up and decided to leave his third life in my hands.

No, seriously, what am I supposed to do with that?

This isn’t the Reiwa era.

It’s the Sengoku period.

There’s no way I’m surviving this.

Come on now.

According to Uncle Nagayoshi, as long as I train the body properly, he’ll take over whenever necessary.

Honestly, the things he says.

By the way, the first person who looked down at me when I woke up was Nagayoshi’s father.

From the conversations flying around, I gathered that his name was Magojirō Motonaga.

Then the woman who appeared, dressed like someone straight out of a historical drama, was Nagayoshi’s mother.

His father called her “Haru.”

Alright.

I’ve memorized my parents’ faces.

Hm?

You’re wondering who I am?

I’ve already forgotten my name, but…

I was a housewife in my mid-fifties.

We were a family of five: my husband, whom I’d married after growing up together as childhood friends, two sons, one daughter, and me.

All of the children had become independent, gotten married, and even had children of their own.

The last thing I remember is lying in bed in the middle of the night when the earthquake alert alarm on my smartphone went off.

I remember thinking, ‘That’s annoying.’

Then my consciousness faded.

Since I lived in Tokushima, perhaps it was the Nankai Trough earthquake or something similar.

That’s right.

I was born in Tokushima.

Raised in Tokushima.

In terms of this era, that means I was born and raised in Awa.

Because of that, I knew a little about the Miyoshi clan.

But since I was born in Tokushima City, I was actually more familiar with the Hachisuka clan.

And my family had absolutely no connection whatsoever to the Miyoshi family.

As for being a history buff, that would be giving me far too much credit.

I did like Oda Nobunaga well enough, so I had some interest in all the complicated events surrounding this period.

To be honest, from a local’s perspective, the Miyoshi clan was simply unlucky.

They got involved with Hosokawa Harumoto and ended up being dragged into the affairs of the Kinai region.

I think I had warned him about that during his first life.

But he got caught up in the feud between his father and Harumoto.

After that, things probably unfolded just as history records.

In his later years, he lost both his son and his brothers.

In the end, he was deceived by those around him and even killed his own younger brother with his own hands.

Then he spent the rest of his life in loneliness.

I suppose that’s what he wants to change.

But…

Is it really okay to dump all of that on me?

Come to think of it, my children used to read a lot of manga and novels about reincarnation when they were students.

My husband liked those stories too.

Though he was a bit unusual.

He was very much the hands-on type.

He’d say things like, “This could be useful for the children’s education,” and then try all sorts of things himself.

Really, all sorts of things.

Usually after watching videos online.

Because of that, he taught our children so many survival skills that they were probably capable of surviving on a deserted island.

If they all survived…

I hope they’re managing somehow.

It’s a bit late for that now, but I can’t help wishing it with all my heart.

Well, that’s what my previous life was like.

Ah, but I suppose that’s true.

Even if I interfere, it will probably create a different parallel world.

That’s how these things usually work.

And Nagayoshi seems perfectly fine with that.

Maybe I’ll give it a try.

Even if I am just an old lady.

I wonder if I’ll survive.

Hehehe.

If I do survive…

Maybe I’ll even get to meet the real Oda Nobunaga.

Thinking about all sorts of things like that, I eventually drifted off to sleep before I realized it.
