Chapter 15: The Bear Gets Picked on at the Guild Again
The next day, I headed to the guild early in the morning to take on a request.
The reason for going early was to find a good job.
If possible, I wanted a subjugation-type request that would help me practice magic.
Even better if it wasnât wolves.
With that in mind, I set out early.
As I strolled along, casually looking at the town, someone called out to me from behind.
âGood morning, Yuna-nee-chan.â
âGood morning, Fina. Heading to the guild again today?â
âYes. Are you going too, Yuna-nee-chan?â
âYeah, I thought Iâd try taking on some work.â
âI see. Please be careful not to get hurt.â
âI hope you find some work too, Fina.â
âYes.â
Fina smiled brightly and grabbed my bear-hand.
I didnât brush her off and instead held her hand back.
Her smile widened even more.
Since I never had siblings, I wondered if having a little sister like this wouldâve been nice.
While chatting with Fina as she happily smiled, we arrived at the guild.
âThen Iâll go check for work.â
âSee you.â
After sending Fina off, I entered the guild.
There was already a crowd gathered in front of the request board.
Maybe I was too late.
One person noticed me, then two, and soon the awareness spread.
But no one spoke to me.
Just as I thought that, someone called out.
âSo youâre the girl who defeated Deborane?â
One of the adventurers spoke to me.
He looked about three or four years older than me.
ââŚDeborane?â
I tilted my head.
I didnât recognize the name.
âWho?â
I asked, unable to recall.
âYou. A girl wearing that ridiculous bear outfit, bear gloves, and bear boots.â
Well, itâs probably true that no one else in the world dresses like this.
If there were, Iâd like to meet them.
âI donât remember anyone named Deborane, but if you mean the girl in a bear outfit, thatâs probably me.â
âBecause of you, Deborane canât work due to his injuries!â
âOh, you mean the adventurer who picked a fight with me?â
Thatâs the only person that comes to mind.
âThatâs right!â
Ah, I remember now.
That was the name of the guy who started trouble with me that first time.
Still, I donât see why I should be blamed.
Maybe I should call the guild master.
He did promise to handle things if I got harassed.
âThat Deborane guy picked a fight with me, I accepted, and he got hurt. Iâm not at fault. And besides, thereâs no need to make a fuss just because a goblin got injured.â
âYou dare call Deborane a goblin!â
âHeâs rude, acts tough against weaker opponents, canât understand reason, and canât do anything unless heâs in a group. From any angle, heâs a goblin.â
âDonât mess with me!â
So noisy.
You donât have to shoutâI can hear you just fine.
âAre you also a goblin who canât understand words? That issue was already settledâit was his fault.â
âThereâs no way Deborane would lose to someone like you!â
âStop it, Lanz. The guild master already explainedâsheâs not at fault.â
A blonde woman in her early twenties stepped between us.
She was slender and quite beautiful.
âBut because of her, we canât complete our request!â
âThat still doesnât make it her faultâyou understand that.â
âGil, say something too.â
He called out to the large man standing beside the woman.
The guy was built like a smaller version of the guild master.
âDeborane is at fault.â
âWhat? You too are siding with this weird girl?â
âFrom what I heard, Deborane is at fault.â
âBut that doesnât mean she had to go that far!â
Was he really that badly injured?
I did punch his face until it changed shape, though.
âItâs his own fault, so it canât be helped.â
âThatâs right. He was close to having his guild card revoked.â
âAnd thatâs because of her!â
âUm⌠if the three of you are just going to argue, can I go?â
âAh, sorry. Lanz is angry because Deborane canât take on requests due to his injuries.â
âThat still doesnât give him the right to complain to me.â
âI know that, butâŚâ
âThen why not take a request the three of you can handle until he recovers?â
âWeâve already accepted one.â
âAnd if we cancel it, itâll count as a failure!â
Failures stay on your guild record forever.
They probably want to avoid that stain.
But taking it out on me isnât my problem.
Deborane started that fightâIâm not at fault.
âThen just give up.â
âThatâll delay our rank progression!â
âI heard Yuna was being bothered by adventurersâso itâs you guys.â
âGuild Master!â
The muscle mountain himself showed up.
Seems like someone at the reception called him.
âI already told youâYuna isnât at fault for the Deborane incident.â
âBut because of her, we canât complete our request!â
âThatâs your own responsibility. Deborane picked a fight and lost. You left him alone and didnât manage him properly. You knew he was hot-headed.â
âWell⌠yeah.â
âThen I have a solution.â
âWhat, youâll cancel the request without marking it as a failure?â
âThatâs impossible. Once accepted, a request canât be undone. If you cancel, itâs a failure.â
âThen whatâs your solution?â
âTake Yuna with you. Sheâs already proven stronger than Deborane.â
âHey, donât decide that on your own!â
âItâs simple. Replace Deborane with Yuna as a temporary party member.â
âNo way. Why should I take on some random request like that?â
âBecause thatâs the cleanest solution.â
âUm, Yuna-chan, could you at least hear us out?â
A woman dressed like a mage spoke to me.
What should I doâŚ
I donât really want to join a partyâI hardly had any party experience even in the game.
Itâs not like I had noneâjust very little.
In the end, I couldnât find a way to refuse, so I agreed to at least hear them out.
We borrowed a room in the guild, and I sat with Deboraneâs three party members.
By the way, the guild master ran away.
Wasnât he supposed to protect me from trouble?
This is all Deboraneâs fault.
âLetâs start with introductions. Iâm Rurina. The one who complained earlier is Lanz, and the quiet one is Gil.â
âIâm Yuna.â
At least I gave a basic greeting.
âNow then, the request we accepted is a goblin subjugation.â
Goblin subjugation?
Goblins are low-intelligence humanoid monsters.
Arenât they beginner-level enemies?
If they need a party for that, are they weak?
âItâs not just ordinary goblins. Itâs a group of about fifty. Without Deborane, our frontliner, itâs tough.â
Fifty goblins.
Back in the game, theyâd be nothing.
What about now?
I handled a wolf pack easily.
In the game, goblins and wolves were considered roughly the same level.
If that holds true, then even a group shouldnât be impossible.
âJust to confirmâwhich is easier, a wolf pack or a goblin group?â
âIn terms of request rank, theyâre about the same. It depends on the party composition. For us, goblins are easier.â
âWhy?â
âWolves are fast. With only me as a support mage, itâs tough. Goblins can be overwhelmed in close combat.â
Still⌠goblins.
Humanoid monsters.
Iâll have to fight them eventually.
In a game, it wouldnât matter⌠butâŚ
âThis is your fault! Help us!â
âLanz, be quiet!â
I could help, but I donât like the idea of just replacing Deborane.
Lanz has a bad attitude, Gil just stands there silently, and only Rurina seems reasonable.
And honestly, as a shut-in, dealing with people is a hassleâI donât want to help.
But I did injure himâŚ
Though it wasnât my fault.
Hmm⌠what should I do?
âCan I set some conditions?â
âIf itâs something we can accept, then yes.â
âAh, so itâs about splitting the reward? How greedy.â
I ignored him.
âIâll handle the request alone. You can take full credit for completing it. You can also keep all the rewards. In return, make sure Deborane never gets involved with me again.â
âYuna-chan, letting you handle it aloneâŚâ
âYouâre telling us to just stand back and watch?â
âWhy not? You get the credit and the rewardâthereâs no downside for you.â
âIf you fail, it counts as our failure too! Thereâs no way we can accept that.â
âAnd itâs embarrassing. Letting someone else do the job and claiming it as our ownâŚâ
Thatâs fair.
If I fail, it becomes their failure.
And Rurinaâs point makes sense tooâitâs shameful as adventurers.
What should I doâŚ
âThen how about only Rurina comes with me?â
âWhy only Rurina?â
âIsnât it obvious? Sheâs the most reasonable, the most sensible, the easiest to talk to, and the only woman here. The biggest reason is that I donât want to work with you.â
âYouâ!â
âLanz, stop.â
Rurina calmed him down.
âYuna-chan, can you really defeat a goblin group alone?â
âI think so. The wolf pack was easy. Besides, having others around would just get in the way of my magic.â
âYuna-chan, you can use magic? I didnât hear anything about you using magic during your match with Deborane.â
âI didnât use it.â
To be precise, I hadnât learned magic at that time.
âThereâs no need to use magic on weak enemies. Rurina, you wouldnât use magic to kill a small insect, right?â
Lanzâs mouth hung open, humiliated by having Deborane compared to an insect.
âCan you really do it?â
âFifty DeboranesâI mean goblins, right?â
âTheyâre goblins.â
âFine. Iâll go with you.â
âRurina?â
âGil, is that okay?â
âI donât mind.â
âThen Yuna-chan, please help us.â
âSo when are we going?â
âIf youâre okay with it, we can leave right now.â
âThatâs fine, but I havenât prepared anything.â
âThatâs okay. We were originally planning to leave early this morning, so we already have supplies and preparations for four people.â
Lanz silently glared at me, but I ignored him.
Gil didnât say a word.
And so, I left the guild with Rurina, heading out to subjugate goblins together.
