Chapter 12: Ellen of the Church
“Slowly inhale, slowly exhale… please calm down.”
I hold my hand over the person lying down.
As I focus my consciousness, a soft, warm light spills forth.
Healing magic.
A form of magic mainly used by those who serve the gods in the church.
I had that talent.
Though I was raised as a noblewoman, even if only from a minor house, I had never been involved in such direct acts of service.
That was why I had never known of my own aptitude until now.
“Alright, it’s finished.
How do you feel?”
“Ah… I feel much better now.
Thank you very much, Sister.”
Sister is not a strict title.
But broadly speaking, that is what I am now.
“Yes.
Please take care.
Be sure to rest for a while.”
Thus, as someone able to use healing magic, I carry out my daily duties.
Surprisingly, I find these days not unpleasant at all.
It feels as though this work suits me.
“Ellen… are you finished?
Let’s start preparing lunch.”
“Yes, understood.”
That’s right.
Ellen.
That is the name I go by now.
Ellen, a pitiful ‘commoner’ woman driven out by an unfaithful husband.
Of course, I am staying at a church far removed from both the Carlson Barony and the Vent Viscounty.
I, Electra Vent, sought the church’s protection after leaving a divorce document for my former husband at the Carlson household.
And I took the name ‘Ellen.’
I had suspected that someone bore malice toward me, and that members of the church were also involved.
It was no more than conjecture, but it was likely true.
Even so, I deliberately sought the church’s protection.
Partly to hide without being discovered, and partly because I wished to understand the nature of my enemy, even if only a little.
Of course, I had no intention of conducting any dangerous investigation.
At first, I was nervous about whether this would work.
But now, I believe I have completely blended in.
It seems that the ones who sought to bring me down are not the entirety of the church.
Thus, those unrelated to the affair are simply kind to me, and this place is nothing but comfortable.
Once my talent for healing magic was discovered and I began helping others, I even started to think this might be my true calling.
To be honest, my days are fulfilling.
If that ‘someone’ no longer has any interest in me, then that is fine.
Because I am certain that I would have been unhappy had I remained Harid’s wife.
Now, I can even think that things turned out for the best.
“Alright.
After lunch, it’s back to work again!”
Smiling brightly at my fellow sisters, I continued living my peaceful life today as well.
