Chapter 2: Return

When I opened my eyes, I wasn’t in the stone room where I had lived in the other world.

Instead, I found myself in a familiar wooden room.

It seemed I had safely returned to my original world.

But if I had truly been returned to the exact moment I left, I should have reappeared on the university campus at night.

So why was I inside a room?

The room itself also felt strange.

I had gone to university in Tokyo, not my hometown.

My apartment in Tokyo had been an eight-tatami room with a kitchen, toilet, and bathroom.

But the room I was in now was a six-tatami wooden room containing only a bed, a study desk, and a clothes rack.

There wasn’t even a door leading to a kitchen, toilet, or bathroom.

In fact, there wasn’t even an entrance.

It felt as though I was inside a room in someone else’s house.

As I wondered where I was, I suddenly realized it was my old bedroom at my parents’ house.

The god had said he would return me to my original world at the original point in time.

Come to think of it, he had never mentioned returning me to the original location.

Did he simply send me back to my family home instead?

But when I left for university, I had thrown away my study desk and the rest of the furniture.

My room had been turned into a storage room.

What was going on?

The bookshelf on the desk held my high school textbooks.

My old high school uniform was hanging from the clothes rack.

I was certain those had all been thrown away when I entered university.

Why had everything I discarded reappeared?

Then I noticed a smartphone lying on the desk.

I picked it up and checked the date.

It was April 1st… five years before the day I had been summoned to the other world.

Five years ago…

That meant I was a second-year high school student.

I had returned from another world only to end up time-leaping!

That god…

He had promised to return me to the original point in time, yet somehow sent me back five years too far.

Still, my return was already complete.

There was no way I wanted to travel to the other world again just to come back a second time.

Besides, I had no idea how to contact the god even if I wanted to.

My thoughts were in complete disarray, so I headed to the kitchen to get a drink of water.

As I slowly sipped from the glass, I gradually calmed down.

Given the situation, it seemed I had no choice but to accept that I had mistakenly returned to my second year of high school.

I tried recalling what my life had been like back then before this time leap.

I had been nothing more than an ordinary background character.

Lacking confidence in myself, I hadn’t made many good memories during high school.

There were countless moments I regretted, wondering, โ€˜What if I had done things differently?โ€™

Since I had been given a second chance at my second year of high school, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to redo everything.

There was also the matter of job hunting during my fourth year of university.

I had struggled immensely to get a job offer.

This time, I’d study much harder so I could get into a better university and make things easier for my future self.

Now that I had a rough idea of how I wanted to spend my second chance at high school, I decided to see what had become of me.

The god had told me that when I returned to my original world, my profession would be erased, and every skill and spell I had learned would disappear.

Just to test it, I muttered, “Water.”

Nothing came out of my hand.

What a shame.

After all the hardship I had endured to learn magic…

Then again, maybe it was for the best.

If magic actually worked in this world, it probably wouldn’t lead to anything good.

After all, excessive power often invites disaster.

Next, I went to the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror.

A much younger version of myself stared back.

Even though it was only a difference of five years, a high school student looked quite different from a university student.

Unfortunately, my plain face hadn’t changed.

Well… maybe my features looked a little sharper.

Still, considering I had restored peace to another world, it would have been nice if my reward had included becoming handsome.

My physique, however, had changed dramatically.

Apparently, the body I had forged through those brutal years of training in the other world had carried over.

Before being summoned, I had never belonged to any sports club.

I had been skinny and weak.

I had lost all the skills and magic I gained through that hellish training, but I was grateful that at least the body I had built remained.

Fortunately, my school uniform had been bought a size larger in anticipation that I might grow, so I was still able to wear it.

When my parents returned from their overseas business trip shortly before the start of the new school term, they were shocked by how much my physique had changed.

I explained that I had spent the spring break training.

I also jokingly quoted, “A man absent for three days deserves a fresh look.”

Somehow, that was enough to convince them.
