Chapter 21: The Bear Sells Materials
After leaving the guild, I headed to the material purchasing counter in the building next door.
There were three counters, and two of them were busy, so I naturally walked up to the empty one.
“Hey there, bear girl. Selling wolves again?”
Gentz greeted me with a grin.
“I’ve got other monsters too.”
“Oh? Well, the guild will buy anything as long as it can be sold.”
For now, I took out ten wolves from the Bear Box.
The adventurers in the room started murmuring.
After all, I had just brought in ten wolves by myself.
“That’s a lot again today.”
Gentz called out to the staff in the back and instructed them to carry the wolves away.
Two workers came out and began hauling them off.
Once the counter cleared, I brought out ten horned rabbits next.
The noise in the room grew even louder.
A horned rabbit is about one meter in size and has a horn.
It looks cute, but its jumping power is strong, and its frontal leap attack is dangerous.
If your armor is weak, you can be impaled and killed by its horn.
“What, you’ve got horned rabbits too? And they all look freshly hunted.”
Gentz once again called to the back to have them carried away.
“You still don’t butcher them, huh?”
“I don’t know how, and it’s a hassle.”
“Well, it’s good for the guild since it gives us more work, but as an adventurer, you’ll lose profit if you don’t learn.”
“I’ll learn eventually.”
That’s what I said on the surface, but I had no intention of learning right now.
More accurately, I didn’t think I could do it.
I had only just gotten used to monster corpses.
Butchering was still way above my level.
As we talked, all the horned rabbits were carried away.
“Alright, so today it’s ten wolves and ten horned rabbits?”
“I still have something the guild master asked me to bring.”
“The guild master?”
I took out one orc.
“Whoa, you’ve got orcs too? Wait… don’t tell me you have ten of those as well?”
Orcs range from about two meters to three meters tall.
There was no way one person could carry them, and even putting one on the counter would be a hassle.
As soon as I brought one out, the adventurers started making noise again.
“No way, that’s an orc!”
“But it really is one…”
“Did she defeat it alone?”
Ignoring them, I answered Gentz.
“I do have ten.”
“Hold on. I’ve got questions about that item bag of yours, but we can’t have ten orcs here. Come to the cold storage in the back.”
With Gentz’s permission, I went behind the counter into the storage area.
As I walked, I could hear the adventurers talking.
“Ten? No way.”
“How do you even defeat that?”
“Because she’s a bear?”
“If she’s a Bloody Bear, maybe…”
“Yeah, that Bloody Bear…”
“What’s a Bloody Bear?”
“You don’t know…?”
…What’s with this “Bloody Bear”?
I wanted to listen more, but Gentz had already gone ahead, so I followed him.
Soon, their voices faded away.
Inside the storage room, it was cold, likely because of ice-type magic stones.
“Close the door behind you. The temperature will rise otherwise.”
I stepped in and shut the door.
Inside, there were piles of butchered monster meat and materials.
The wolves and horned rabbits I brought earlier were already there.
Staff members were working busily.
“Sorry about the cold, but if it warms up, the meat will spoil.”
Gentz walked to a large table at the back.
Even then, it only had enough space for one orc.
“Sorry, but put one here, and the rest on the floor nearby.”
I followed his instructions and took them out of the Bear Box.
“Thanks. Moving orcs is tough, you know. But are you sure? If we butcher them, your payout will decrease.”
“I can’t butcher them, so it’s fine. And I’m not short on money.”
“Well, selling this much would definitely make you rich. By the way, what rank are you now?”
“I just became Rank D today.”
“Rank D, huh? Makes sense if you can defeat orcs. Actually, could you do me a favor?”
“What is it?”
“You’re not good at skinning and butchering, right?”
“…Yes.”
“So, could you give some of your work to one of the younger ones here?”
“Wouldn’t that reduce the guild’s income?”
“Losing one person’s business won’t matter. There are hundreds of adventurers.”
That was true.
The guild functioned fine before I arrived, so it wouldn’t collapse without me.
“But why that specific person?”
“She’s still a minor, not a guild employee. Someone you know.”
“…Fina?”
There was only one young girl I knew.
“You know her situation, right?”
I nodded.
No father, a sick mother, and a younger sister three years her junior.
“I give her work when I can, but most jobs are handled by staff. There’s not much left for her.”
“So you want me to pass my work to Fina?”
“Exactly. She’s very skilled for her age. She won’t damage the materials either.”
“That’s fine, but I don’t know how long I’ll stay in this town.”
I still wanted to visit the royal capital and maybe even other countries.
“That’s fine. Even while you’re here, it’ll help her.”
“How much should I pay her? I don’t know the rates.”
“The guild takes twenty percent. So if you give her ten percent of the sale price, that’s enough.”
“Ten percent is enough?”
“That’s already generous. If you think it’s too much, you can lower it.”
“Got it.”
“I’ll go get Fina, so wait here.”
Gentz happily went into the back room and quickly returned with Fina.
“Big Sis Yuna!”
She ran over and hugged me.
Yeah, she’s cute.
I patted her head.
Though… she smelled a bit like blood.
“Fina, have you been well?”
“Yes! And is it true you’re going to give me work?”
“Yes. I want you to butcher the monsters I bring.”
“Thank you so much!”
She smiled brightly.
“Fina, you don’t need to come here for a while.”
“But—”
“These past few days have been busy because this girl here brought everything unprocessed. If she gives you the work, the guild will have less. But don’t worry, you’ll still work today. She brought ten wolves, ten horned rabbits, and ten orcs.”
“That many!?”
“So what should I do starting tomorrow?”
“Can I come to your inn, Big Sis Yuna?”
“That’s fine.”
“Then I’ll come around seven!”
That felt early, but people in this world start working at sunrise.
And once the sun sets, work ends.
Even though magic stones can provide light, no one goes out of their way to work at night.
After making plans with Fina, I left the storage room.
Outside felt warm compared to inside.
I received today’s payment from Gentz and returned to the inn.
