Chapter 9: The Bear Gets a Guild Card — Occupation: Bear

Since we returned from the training grounds, I immediately proceeded to get my guild card made.

“Alright, I’ll register you now, so please fill in your name, date of birth, and occupation.”

Helen, who had just finished arranging treatment for the injured, handled the registration.

She looked exhausted.

Let me declare that it’s not my fault.

“Date of birth?”

“Yes, it’s required to confirm your age.”

“Isn’t just age enough?”

“If we only record age, it won’t update when your birthday comes.”

I see.

Otherwise, people would stay eternally eighteen.

But what should I write for my birth date?

Well, with the Otherworld Language skill, it should work somehow.

For now, I write my name as “Yuna” in Japanese.

Then I write my birth date in the Gregorian calendar.

Looking at it, Helen says,

“So Yuna, you’re 15 years old.”

Seems it translated properly.

Fantasy is convenient.

Next is occupation.

“Occupation?”

“It helps with party recruitment and certain job requests.”

“Party…”

I didn’t react because I’m a loner.

Not at all.

It’s just that I didn’t have many friends.

Not zero.

In the game, I was a magic swordsman.

Since I played solo, I needed both physical and magical attacks.

Some monsters required one or the other.

That’s why I chose it.

It wasn’t unpopular.

I just didn’t join parties.

I wasn’t not invited.

“Can I leave it blank?”

“It would help if you filled it in.”

“Hmm…”

What is my current occupation?

I can’t use magic.

I don’t have a sword.

A martial artist?

No.

More like…

A voice in my head says: your occupation is “bear.”

I want to ignore that.

Name: Yuna
Date of Birth: 20XX / X / X
Occupation: Bear

…I wrote it.

Helen looks at me with half-lidded eyes.

But she says nothing.

She probably just wants this over with.

“Please place your hand on the crystal.”

Same as the one at the gate.

It registers magic power.

Maybe magic is like fingerprints.

While I think about that, Helen continues operating it.

“Registration will take a moment, so I’ll explain the guild system. Your card will record your rank, completed requests, successes, failures, and current requests. This information can be viewed at any guild.”

So even failures are recorded.

Makes sense.

No one wants to hire someone with many failures.

“Are monster kills recorded?”

“No, they are not. They are meaningless.”

“Huh?”

“Even if you bring a magic stone, we can’t tell if you defeated it alone or with a hundred people.”

That makes sense.

Unlike a game, kills aren’t auto-recorded.

Otherwise, it would cause arguments.

“Next, ranks. They go from F to S. Promotion depends on success and failure rates. Too many failures will prevent promotion. Also, repeating the same rank won’t increase your rank.”

“What do you mean?”

“You can take requests one rank above your own. If you keep doing only F-rank jobs, you won’t rank up.”

“So you need to complete higher-rank requests.”

“As a guideline, about ten higher-rank requests. The guild makes the final decision.”

“What if you work with higher-ranked adventurers?”

“If higher-ranked members are involved, the requirement increases. For example, a D-rank working with a C-rank may need 20 or more completions. If assisted by an S-rank, you won’t rank up at all.”

“What if you hide it?”

“That depends on personal morals. Some nobles do use such methods.”

So basically, paying strong people to boost rank.

“Lastly, only you can use this card. Losing it costs ten silver coins to reissue.”

She hands me a silver card.

Name: Yuna
Age: 15
Occupation: Bear
Rank: F

…She really wrote “Bear.”

I look at Helen.

She smiles sweetly.

“Requests are posted on that board. Bring one to the counter if you want to accept it.”

There’s a crowd in front of one board.

Another board is empty.

“What about that one?”

“Those are higher-rank requests.”

I see.

“Anything else?”

“Not for now. I’ll ask later if needed.”

“Will you take a request today?”

“I’ll explore the city first. I just arrived yesterday.”

After leaving the guild, I find Fina waiting.

“Fina, what’s wrong?”

“I was worried about you.”

“Sorry. I’m fine. I got registered. Did you get work?”

“No. Most adventurers process their own materials, so there aren’t many unprocessed ones.”

“I see.”

I definitely don’t want to butcher monsters.

Even if it pays less, I’ll bring them as-is.

That’s what the bear storage is for.

I pat her head and start to leave, but stop.

“Oh right. Fina, you’re free today, right?”

“Yes.”

“Can you guide me around the city? I’ll pay one silver coin and lunch.”

“That’s too much. A ten-year-old can’t earn that in a day.”

“Then consider it special. Once I learn the city, this job disappears.”

I gently pat her head again.

“Thank you, Yuna onee-chan.”

“Then let’s go. First, take me to a good weapon shop.”

One of my goals: get a weapon.
